I subbed on Sunday with a band that I never played with before.

    I was playing third trumpet.

The guy playing lead was having some endurance trouble.

Is it ok to offer help?

I didn't because I didn't know him and I didn't want to insult him but would it have been ok?

You did the right thing. Most people would not be happy to be offered this kind of help when they didn't ask for it. He might have thought that he was doing fine, even if he wasn't.

I agree - maybe if you become a member and become established, but not as a sub.

When I was playing Latin band, there times, albeit pretty few, when I jumped in to bail the lead player because I could hear that he needed it, (or on occasion he'd actually say, "Hey Biff, play that E coming up" or something like that) but never as a sub, not that I have fantastic range anyway.
