This is probably a stupid question, but is it better to oil your valves before you play or after you play? or both?? Does it matter?

Some of it evaporates off the valves while it's in the case, so it's better to oil before you play.

Yes before. In shipping from Ohio to the West Coast, Customers had trouble with valve action until I discovered that the problem was evaporating valve oil that was leaving a residue behind on the valve casings. We now ship valves dry and clean with instructions to oil valves before playing. No more problems. Also some valve oils evaporate faster than others.

If you play every day it probably wont matter, but why not before, it gives you the most benefit per drop....if that means anything. Probably splitting hairs here. Best wishes.

I recommend the best time to oil the valves is when the valves need to be oiled.

No need - just play the horn upside down and get a friend to drip oil in the valve caps.
