The great Doc Cheatham played BIG until he was 92. And then he died. That's how I want to go.
A google search suggests he is 89 years old - but I can't confirm that.
I did see Gil Askey play earlier in the year and I think he is 87.
Former first-call LA player Ollie Mitchell is well and active (and in relative "retirement") on the Big Island of Hawaii at the age of 85.
I heard the Honolulu Big Band play at the Ilikai Hotel a few years ago, and they were very good. Can't seem to find them now, though. Mitchell picked a great place for retirement...Hawaii is our favorite vacation place, plus I was based there from 1990-1994.
I too saw him a few months back (he might not be as he was in his younger days .........But he sure does have the licks and the entertaining down to a tee A great bee-bop muso)
So there's hope for me still yet.
