Over Playing

    Is it possible to lose your tone/range/endurance from playing too much??? Over the last 8 weeks ive been playin for almost 5 hours day, 5 days a week and it seems lik im losing all of the things i just stated above.

    It depends on how long you've been playing, if your a mature high level player that's been playing for several years and has built the endurance to play like that then you probably can play this long without hurting yourself. However, if you've only been playing a couple years and are a high school or college student then you probably shouldn't play that much and should cut back to maybe 3 hours at most. Also when you practice, you should practice in shorter sessions vs one long one like breaking up those 5 hours into five 1 hour long sessions and don't practice too loud either.

    Yeah. Im only a sophomore in high school and ive been playing for about 5 years. The reason for this playing is because my band is practicing for a competition.

    Yeah. At that caliber of playing you shouldn't be practicing for 5 hours. Once you've matured as a player, you're chops will be ready for that kind of intensity.

    Tone, range and endurance can all be improved by practicing softly long enough to compensate for the loud, chop beating parts. Playing softly is lower impact and requires more focused strength (finesse) than playing loudly.

    I practiced that much back then. Still can play today - 40 years later.

    It has more to do with the intelligent routine than the amount of hours. If you are doing what you are supposed to, then 5 hours is just fine. That means playing softly and in a controlled way. If testosterone governs your routine, then probably 30 minutes gets obnoxious for everyone.

    I think it has to be approached on a case by case basis. There is such a thing as occupational hazards and injuries, and more is not necessarily better. And there is a difference between playing and practicing intelligently for 5 hours a day, and slamming your chops for 5 hours a day. You probably need to back off a bit if you can.

    You could also be using too much mpc pressure combined with the long sessions would do it. Sometimes the problem is right under your nose! ;-)
