Actually Phil was a minitster kid (PK) and did his first album at 19. I have that one in my collection of LP's, and it is a fabulous instrumental gospel (contemporay Christian at that time). I do believe it was a bit later in life (like so many of us) that he thought he could do a better job with his life by going his way, and doing his thing -- and that was the Joe Cocker era, and some illicit uses of substances -----------and as they say -------- God "woke" him up one day, got Phil back to his calling as a gospel musician ---- and the rest is history.

although they say that Phil became a christian later in life -- it is my belief, and what I recall from his personal testimony --- that he rededicated his life to Jesus ----- . I have both of his early WORD albums from the 70's --- blowing a new mind, and the touch of trumpet ---- definitely inspirational, and in my opinion - spirit filled and annointed ------
