Maybe it's old news but I just heard that Phil Smith Principal Trumpet NY Phil. is retiring, this being his last year. I believe he became a co-principal in 1978 after coming from Chicago, and became Principal Trumpet in 1988.
I've been going to the brass holiday "Christmas" concert for many years and will be attending, Lincoln Center again on the 15th. this year. Phil Smith is my favorite and I'm so disappointed that this will be his last year. But Godspeed and best wishes to the best trumpet player I know. He's a great guy too. He played at a camp I go to in the Adirondacks. He was absolutely awesome!

It's good of you to bring this to the attention of our community.

I've been a bit out of touch with the major orchestras for a while. Are there any particular recordings we should seek out to gain a fuller appreciation of his art?

It's on Spotify (highly recommended) and you don't have to do the whole "illegal download" thing.
