At my high school, in order to receive an Honors grade, you must perform 3 solo pieces on your instrument for some judges (the teachers). I need some help picking the right music to perform.

I am a 2nd year in high school

I play trumpet (obviously) and I am pretty good

The three pieces need to be by famous composers ex. Bach...

The three pieces need to be contrasting and cannot be really easy.

They should each be at least two pages, probably no more.

And, just a reminder, no accompaniments. Just the player.

    Thanks for all your help:lol:

How much time do you have. If you have alot I would say ask if you can do the Arutunian Concerto or part of it. That solo is amazing. Its normally 4 (5 if you do the cadenza), but im sure you could work something otu with your teachers. Sorry I seriously dont know to many songs so just my two cents. I would say get a private teacher and let them help you pick the pieces.

Really good move to ask before the term begins. It was so nice not to read, "In two weeks I need . . .."

Maybe for one of your three, Arban's 2nd Characteristic Study might be a candidate. Asks for dexterity, flexibility, some power in the middle section, and musicality throughout.

Wonderfully melodic in a haunting and powerful sort of way.

How 'bout the Kennan Sonata? It's MUCH easier without piano accompaniment.

Thanks for the comments so far, they are very helpful.

I have until about fall or something...I don't have a private teacher, but I will get one eventually.

If you are only in your second year of high school and have no teacher, I would reccomend playing:

    Ravel's "Pavane"
    Hayden's "Concerto movement II"
    Goedicke's "Concert Etude"

Just my suggestions - and since you dont have a teacher I would seriously think about finding some recordings of these pieces.

    Good luck

don't forget the easier cornet solos those are nice pieces for high school students to do. also the french conservatory solos work nice have contrasting sections. barat or bozza are good starting points.

the fitzgerald transcriptions are quite well done, he has transcribed quite a few baroque pieces.
