    I believe most "wrecked chops" that occur in marching are result of a hammering effect of the mouthpiece on the lips consistent with a jerky stomping motion of the feet as apposed to a rhythmic stride, Yes, it is only the instrument temperature and player skill that affect tonation of the music.
