I play principal trumpet with a wind ensemble. The question of what is expected of a principal player led me to ask this.

I am going to play a concerto with the band. We are also doing a lot of other stuff with trumpet solos. Do I give the other first work away or should I play all the solos. I have enough lip to play everything, but I think this is a good opportunity to give others a chance. Whenever I ask the conductor about this kind of thing, he tells me to make the decision.

    What would you do?

    dear B15,

Absolutely, give the other players a shot at a tune or two before you play at least. Give your head a chance to get in the game.
