What do you call a style of music where a trumpet player simply plays the lead vocals covering pop songs?

In my opinion when you introduce improv to pop music you get "smooth jazz."

But what if you were to just play pop songs "straight"... as originally written?

In that case, I think it'd just be pop. Just having a trumpet doesn't constitute jazz.

It is only music. The truly brilliant players do not let themselves get put in a drawer. The beauty is being able to add elements from everywhere.

Those that limit themselves, limit the fun and potential income. One nasty crack about country music and you may have lost something very lucrative..................
