The trouble likely is a worn slide tube. Is the trumpet fairly old? I learned to mix Vaseline and lanolin from Flip Oakes. Lanolin is too stiff on its own sometimes (come to think of it, for the tuning slide, it would be okay straight), so the petroleum jelly thins it down.
Remember it is the accoustic pulses that push the air out of these sorts of places, not simple air pressure. Using a thicker lubrication will seal the leak off for awhile. I have this problem with my Benge's third valve slide.
Actually, it looks from your clarification as though the upper tube is loose. The repairman will certainly be able to find and repair it.
