    Manny and others,
This week the orchestra I play in is doing selections from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suites. I was just wondering how you guys pass out the parts in relation to the Principal, second and third player. Here the parts went down the line and since I play second I was given first trumpet. I was just wondering what it was like in other places where there might be a 3rd/Asst. Principal as opposed to just a third. Thanks a bunch.

Your instincts are right. In most professional orchestras that third (if the position is CLEARLY and associate or assistant position) usually gets the 1st trumpet part. The principal, the person presumably with the best high chops, gets the cornet part.

    That's how we do it.
