Acclaimed pros from any style or time period. Just note a few that come to mind. Thanks.

(The title should really be with dark tone quality instead of sounds...)

You will NEVER know for sure unless you hear the player live with no microphone or amplification.

Most of the great players that I look up to are chameleons. They offer what the music demands.

True. But if the recordings are good there is no reason not to look up to those sounds rather than the player right? That sounds really bad but I think you can understand what I'm trying to say. Music wise...

Nope, just like with digital photography, the manipulative possibilities in the studio are except for the few purist audiophile productions always in play.

Think about it, does any trumpet players SOUND in a nice room sound the same when you put the ear to the bell (where the microphone is positioned)? Of course not. EQ, compression, selection of microphone are ALL bigger factors these days than what musician you use.

Only comments where you actually hear the musician without electronics in between really count. I heard Chris Botti try some horns out. It was not sultry/sexy/dark by any stretch of the imagination.

REAL trumpet pros need it all.

Duško Gojković, Jon Hassell, Paolo Fresu, Mathias Eick, Arve Henriksen, Coung Vu!
These are players I have played with, or heard live in studio! (not Vu)

    on a ship somewhere....
Duško Gojković???? Is he the guy that played on the Woody Herman Band with a young Bill Chase? Woody's Winners and the tune 23 Red come to mind.
