Does anyone have any good suggestions for a solid mic that I can hook up to a Mac so I can record my own stuff? Perhaps around $500?

Check out the Cascade Fathead. It's a great high quality inexpensive ribbon mic. Be aware they are pretty fragile. You might have to buy a nice pre amp to go into the computer. I have a Cascade Victor I use for recording often.

I use a Samson USB mic for quick recordings at the shop and it works pretty well in Garage Band.

    Have fun!

btw my Samson mic is the Meteor Model. Not really great to record such a dynamic instrument like the trumpet but it works pretty well in a pinch. Ribbon mics are the only mics I use in the studio.

Would you have any suggestions for the pre amp? Is the Cascade mike a USB type?
