So if red dot is a reaction of the brass alloy to an acidic solution (your saliva) then am I right in supposing it's not a good idea to drink red wine while playing the trumpet? The thought just occurred to me as I took a sip from my red wine while warming up for band practice later tonight.

Even if I'd cornered the entire world stockpile of angst, I don't think I'd trade one jot of it on that particular concern. Enjoy your tipple. :-)

When we clean our horns regularly, what we may blow through them is not as much of a concern.

I am sure the 5% Carbon Dioxide in the air we exhale through the horn some of which being absorbed by the condensation inside to form carbonic acid will be a greater source of rot than the acids in red wine in the stomach.

When the Alcohol in the Red has turned to Acetic acid I dont drink it.

    Regards, Stuart.
