What causes the red rot on trumpets is just not keeping them clean and maintained. Acids from our body/breath and esp. food/drink left in the horn for long periods start the process. I have horns that I've had for over 25 years and not one has a sign of red rot.

    Phil,

Thanks for the info. First time I have heard this. By the way, seems like a lot of Ambassadors have red rot. Yes, there were a lot made, but still seems high. Of all my horns, only the ambassador has it.

Though reluctant to use a word like never, I was never aware of any red rot issues in the British made instruments we used in Brass Bands in New Zealand. And though it is only a sample of one, my 45 year old Besson Cornet is red rot free.

Is there some kind of swab for the leadpipe kind of like a sax swab? That way you could apply some kind of disinfecting solution to it, stick it in the horn, and put it away without worrying about it.

shooter - I make my own swabs using a small square of old flannel shirt, fishing line and a small fishing sinker. you can also buy swabs from a member here [can't remember who] and Bob Reeves. after about 10 years I'm still on my first shirt, you get a lot of squares out of one shirt.

That's a cool horn! A rotary cornet(?) in the shape of a cornopean. What is it, how old is it, and what key does it play in? Almost looks like it could be pitched in A...
