Hey guys, I'm a high school trumpet player with a problem. My sense of rhythm and timing is years behind my abilities on trumpet. I can play stuff like Hindemith and the stuff out if the back of Arban's, but I can't sight read a simple song. I've tried everything. I play with a metronome all of the time and try subdividing in my head. My rhythm is really holding me back. Would getting a few lessons with a percussion teacher help?

So, if your problem is the sight reading, I can offer this advice: Get into a choir and learn to sing. Fastest way to learn sight-reading.

If it's rhythm - get yourself a good trumpet teacher.

I like both ideas, singing and the percussion lessons.

Take up viola. They spend a lot of time counting measures!

Using a pencil, mark your music with the beats and subdivisions. Practice with saying the "one e and a", etc, in your head as you play the music. Work slow and gradually increase to the marked tempo.

By the way, I use the trumpet more and more as a rhythm instrument with my quintet. I actually come our of playing notes to play half valve rhythms (usually Brazilian) behind the drummer. Ask Dr.Mark, he's heard me in action, which he refers to me as "chirping".

I just wiggle my toes (all 10 of them) with the thought of dancing or marching. Works for me, and is not that noticeable if I wear shoes which in practice at home, I usually don't ... many times no socks either.
