Today was a bad day on the horn. Just some overall weakness and inability to play the upper register (which for me stops at high C, usually).

I warmed up with some Cichowicz (first three in VCII), moved on to lip slurs, but when I went to the tonguing exercises, it just wasn't there. At that point, I thought I could do some basic exercises but it was clear I was done, and I packed it up.

Is there something that can be worked on those kinds of days or am I just better off packing it up? My practice time is up to an hour before I start my work day.

The best antidote for those days that the technique isn't working is to skip the technical stuff and play some favorite pieces. When we can forget the technique and concentrate on making music with pieces we love, the technique will usually straighten itself out.

    Have fun!

I had a day like that yesterday, unfortunately I was playing in a pit orchestra at the time! Let's hope I'm back to normal for tonight.

Not only do I feel I have given great advice on salviging a crap day, but also have contributed to enhancing a more fresh air environment. Fine smells improve anyone's day!
