To those with more formal training than myself...
have some sheet music for trumpet an accompaniment, and during the long rests on the page is VI- and then over later rests -DE

Any idea at all what that stands for? I am clueless.

Can you scan, and post a picture. Or be more specific... There are Rehearsal Markings, like A, B, C, etc for making it easier to go to a part of the piece to rehearse. The VI can be used for Chords - but cannot see you coming across it in normal notations on accompaniment sheetmusic. If you were playing a Fanfare then maybe a Chord may be written over a part with the Note from the chord to be played.

I am just guessing, if I can see it, then a better chance to be more specific.
