I use grease on my 1st and 3rd, if I go to oil will there be any negative effects? Do you have to wipe it off after every use?

I must be the only one that uses valve oil on my 1st and 3rd. I have had no negative effect on any horn. I only use a drop on each, top = 1, bottom = 1. Anything more and you have a mess. Do keep a rag handy. My slides are as fast as my valves. As an added benefit, when the slides don't extend on their own when I press my 3rd valve down (with bell pointed down), I know it's time for a bath. I use Hetmans, so drying out isn't a problem.

I'll give that a try with one of my trumpets and the Hetman's #3 and report. I don't have any horns where the ist slide has to go anywhere!

I will try that, my slides use to slide down by themselves with my bell down and I pushed the 3rd valve. Now I have to get them out about an inch, then they slide down. My trumpet is due for a bath so maybe that will help. If not, superslick is going on them. How about trombone slide oil, will that work better on the slides, or is it the same as valve oil?

Don't know about trombone slide oil. What I do works, so I'm not going to mess with it.

At the risk of repeating myself Yet Again, Hetman's makes an oil just for these slides. They call it, oddly enough, "slide oil".
