Well done Catfish - now we've all learnt something - well two things really, how to make your trumpet smell, and how to fix it.

Something else I have found that causes them to smell is small children playing instruments from school, having had them passed on from someone else after a couple of years - and never seeing a bath, ever. They taste really, really horrible. Never, ever use someone else's mouthpiece without pouring boiling water through it first.

I've also seen small spiders living under the reed in a child's clarinet mouthpiece while that mouthpiece is in current use, and an almost mature trumpeter using a knitting needle to clean food from her mouthpiece during a performance.

This may well be a rather "bizzaar" subject for a new thread.
