    Hi,

I got a couple of new mutes a few weeks ago and whenever I put them in the bell they squeak pretty loudly. I know it will probably go away with time, but is there anything I can do to fix it now?

    Thanks

    Hi,

    Try licking before inserting.

    Cheers,

    Brian

squeak some tea-pot trumpet sounds when inserting the mute.

You might want to specify WHAT to lick before inserting.....

It never ceases to amaze me topics that come up on this forum that I've never even really considered to be an issue during almost 30 years I've played this instrument. Squeaky mutes? I mean really, in the context of everything else going on in live performance situations where you'd need to use a mute, is a short, quiet squeak really going to matter to the point where it's worth worrying about?

I noticed that she had the same problem. It's VERY noticeable. It's more than a short, quiet squeak.

Thanks to everyone who actually gave good advice though, I'll try them out!

And yet in the context of what happened, it really didn't matter - I seriously doubt if she had points reduced because of those squeaks. They probably came though much more loudly on the recording than they actually were.

It's not nearly as noticeable in this version - same thing, same day, but recorded from a different vantage point.

I stand by what I said - I think you are over-thinking things - is it really worth worrying about? (She didn't seem to think so and she was the Junior division winner.) And if it is, why not try some things on your own first like roughing up your corks a bit, or maybe rubbing a bit of parafin wax on them with an old candle or something?
