Just back from a stinker of a gig with the Brass Band I play with..

Sitting on Eb Soprano Chair for the night...
    ... no rehearsal
... sight reading for most of the program
... haven't played Eb Sop at this level for a while!

suppose.. I hit the target.. some of the time.. :-?

I must learn to say "no" if there is no opportunity to rehearse beforehand!!

    Ah well..

This is like deja vu all over again!

Didn't Jack have a similar experience recently?

    Yee HAW!
That's when the conductor says "I'd like to thank some of you..................................................... I really would! But I can't."

    Don't you just hate those!!!

You feel like standing up and announcing 'Hey, I'm better than this really!!' to which everyone else in the band responds 'Oh yeh?'

Just have to take it on the chin, part of life's rich tapestry and all that....

    Regards,

    Trevor

Just as well it wasn't our regular professional conductor, and a private concert..
Band was relatively under strength too, it's just I had to sit in what is affectionately known as in the British brass band scene as "the suicide seat"

Ah well, the old saying is true.. PPP = PPP

    Pi$$ poor perparation = Pi$$ poor performance..

    Moving on ..

    Farnham (a place too smal
The soprano seat is the second most nerve-wracking to be sight-reading on. Last time I played with a band I got landed with the principal seat, in concert, no rehearsal - playing a borrowed cornet because I had let a friend borrow mine, not knowing I would need it.

Things I took away from that evening:
NEVER let anyone borrow my cornet.
It is a good thing to know your scales!
Always carry a corkscrew in the car
NEVER let someone else prouce a set of mutes for you
Brass band literature really needs some excitement
    I prefer playing trumpet.

    To Jack and David,

I'm hoping you guys are familiar with the musical" Oklahoma!"

(To the tune of "I'm just a girl who cain't say "No!'")

I'm just a guy who cain't say no
When I get calls from the fix(er).
I grab my case and off I go
Just when I ought to say nix!

Even though I know it's far away
The Tube'll get me there in just a sec(ond).
I don't know the tunes, don't know the way
I think I'm gonna be a bloody wreck!

I'm just a guy who cain't say no
When someone needs me to play.
When common sense says "No, don't blow!"
    I play the gig anyway!

The gauntlet has been thrown down. I look forward to the reply David and Mike...something from South Pacific perhaps, or better still Calamity Jane?
