Did you ever notice how many new members appear here and on TH in the summertime, when band camp is fast approaching and many are looking for a quick fix for a problem? Yep, good old school band camp days are upon us. Not for me, fortunately, but as a bemused observer, I found some lyrics rattling around in my head somewhere:

Summertime, and the stomachs are queasy
    Director's jumpin'
    Expectations are high

    Camp's such a bitch
    And your horn's crappy-lookin'
    So hush little baby
    Don't you cry

    One of these mornings
You're going to rise up marching
    Then you'll spew your guts
    And you'll just wanna die

    But till that morning
    There's a'nothing can help you
With drum line and flag girls standing by

    Summertime,
And the show is so cheesy
    Temperature's jumpin'
    And humidity's high

    Camp's such a bitch
    And your horn's crappy-lookin'
    So hush little baby
    Don't you cry.

My band camp experience was more like this:

Summertime, the flute section's so easy
    Behind the lunch hall
    Expectations are high

    Passion's mounting
    And the breathing gets heavey
    So hush little baby
    Don't you cry

    Put your hand there
    I don't think that's a spit valve
    Pull that trigger
    And you'll just wanna die

    I've got protection
    There's a'nothing can harm you
When I'm finished with this one the flag girls standing by

    Summertime,
    Getting light headed and queezy
    Temperature's jumpin'
    And humidity's high

    But rolling in cool grass
    Hope it's not poisen ivy
    So hush little baby
    Don't you cry.

"This one time, at band camp...". Well, actually, I married a flute player from my band. 'Nuff said.

Sounds like a wonderful time. My band never had band camp - we just had summer band. At the school. In the hottest part of the summer. In the Houston area. Think 100 degrees F, 100% relative humidity, but it's not raining. Marching on the practice field in the hottest part of the day. That's why I don't regret never having been to band camp, although your experiences beat most of my summer band practices.

By the way, a sincere welcome to all the panic-stricken high school trumpeters who've joined here recently. You've already learned something: TANSTAAFL. (Oh, come on, look it up.) Skipping practice, blowing off lessons, and all the other fun things of summer do come with a price. Enjoy your band camp, and may yours be more like gmonday's.

Not true. There are several Brass Band Summer Schools held across the country. The best, probably, is the IBBSS, held in Swansea ( starts today actually). Run by Bob And Nick Childs. Tutors are Richard Marshall, David Childs, Owen Farr, Brett Baker, Joe Cook and some other top players. Fabulous week.

But are there cute flute players in attendence? They go nutso over players of Copper Flugelhorns... Perhaps I shall register.

Yes Rapier but go back 20 years and I had no opportunity to go to a band camp in this country. And I think our Summer Schools are less about range than about music from what I hear from some young friends

Add that fourth valve in and you can't get them off of you!
