I have a new Taylor Chicago II (standard) with the copper bell and was wondering if you could convert this to an Eclipse?

Thanks for any additional info concerning this conversion.

    Liad,

I play a Chicago II (Standard Red brass bell) as well and love it. Hope it was a joke about the conversion although I suspect you may be able to keep the valve block and maybe even the bell (is there much left?). The Eclipse sounds like a fantastic horn though...!!!

    Regards

    Hi Trevor,

I am serious about this question and figure it might not be to much of a change for most of the parts of the horn would remain and the ones to be changed would be the tuning slide and the tuning bell tube attachment. However, we'll see what Leigh has to say about it.

    Hi Liad,

It's an interesting thought. I saw Andy Taylor in August and asked him about the Eclipse. He thought they had a valid point with moving the tuning slide to the back of the bell. I'll look for Leigh's reply as well..

    Regards

    Trevor

    Hi Liad / Camelbrass!!!

    Your too quick Liad .

Yes we always thought from the start that this would be an area we may have to look into if our horns were successful!

I guess i can say that from orders and ongoing interest in our horns that we are here to stay.

You have asked this question about 18 months ahead of when i thought it may pop up so you got me there Liad.

I have not converted other peoples horns as yet, and i am not sure what the other makers would think, but having said that horns are being converted daily with all different types of parts so i guess it is a natural progression and will probably see an Eclipse converted soon? It happens

So to recap I am not against it but would have to give it more thought and the reality is that there is no trumpet to my knowledge that cannot have the conversion for physical reasons.

Nice to hear from you again Liad!

    Leigh

Interesting Idea you have there Liad. I'm curious, what is it that you are looking to accomplish with this conversion? I mean, is there an area of the horn that you are seeking an improvement in? I'm curious as to how one would go about this procedure, I mean, as far as I know there isn't a whole lot of similarities between the Taylor leadpipe and Eclipse's design. Also, aren't the bores quite different? Would you be asking for an altered Eclipse "style" leadpipe?

It seems that the similarities between the two horns can better be addressed by Leigh.

As far as I know, the first couple of feet of tubing is the most critical for sound production. Having that said, making the tuning slide stationary would help especially when that same tuning slide is of a different thickness and fits very losely.

I don't know how other Taylor horns of even the same model are fitted together; however, I can say that tightening up this horn should only produce good results.

P.S. It seems that my other login name got messed up in the system some how.

    Yes it can be done!!

The difference between the taylor yoiu have and mine is really down to bore size of course as yours is a larger bore than my horns, but that is easily taken care of by using the matching bore size tubing when making the front bend .
the back maintuning slide assembly uses the current bell anyhow so that is not a problem, again using a slightly larger bore size for the main tuning slide parts will overcome this.
The biggest consideration of mine would be getting the joint correct from the 1 peice taylor mouthpipe onto the front bend, but nothing is usually un-achievable if you put your mind to it

    Regards

It's like anything else in life Liad...you can have anything you desire (almost) as long as you're willing to write the check. "HA"

In all sincerity, if it can be done and is feasible, Leigh can make it a "working" reality.

    All the best.
