    Hey Mr. Laureano,

So what's your secret to having that brillant but dark tone? What do you even consider as being a good tone? Can you suggest any exercises to clear up the tone and make it sound more lively and full? Thanks

    Read this well, Brandon:

The secret to a good tone is a great ear and a soul that loves music. That's the honest truth.

    That is indeed a quote...

But I think the secret is hearing other trumpet players with the tone you wish to emulate. my favorites

Chris Botti... wow, what a sound!!! (i dont like smooth jazz... but his sound is so nice, its impeccable)
    Manny... Perfect orchestral sound...
Miles... His manipulation was what made his "sound" or tone sound good
Arturo Sandoval... when it comes to latin music, this guy is tops...

So go out and get some recordings, from (I recommend) two people:
Chris Botti (for a good all around trumpet sound) and MSO (for manny, in fact get the copland album, it had fanfare for a common man on it, a very good recording for the tone you are looking for.)

My last request: Don't overanalyse. Hear your sound, don't make it. People like to overanalyse their playing and it gets in their way. As Allen Vizzuti once said: "Analysis leads to paralysis."

I'm making a copy of it and taping it to the inside of my nieces' trumpet case lid so everytime she open up her case to play, that will be her mindset!! Better tape it to the inside of my case as well. :-)
