The wimpy modern "trumpet" vs the mighty contra-alto

    You think that's bad? A buddy of mine got in a fight one night after playing in a bar, and all he had to defend himself was this wimpy little Bb trumpet. When I pulled out my massive contra-alto, you should have seen those thugs take off running! I'm sure they'd never seen anything like it before.

    If only he had had an Ambassador... . He would have maimed the perp and still played the next gig no problems! :roll:

    Not in the right places........ There are drawings out there about where the holes go. The problem is that the sound changes. Compare Niklas Eklund (holey) to Jean Francois Madeuf (unholey).

    If you have the equipment to work on horns, you can find just the right spot by trial and error. You'll be doing a lot of patching, but eventually you'll find all the horn's sweet spots.

    I used a garden hose and an old Bb trumpet bell to originally figure it out. Machine screws plugged the holes that I didn't need.

    I have all of the equipment, but generally buy the horns finished.
