    my teacher said to me
"if you dont know what you playing, your not playing music, when you do know what you playing, then you are playing music"

I didnt get it at the time but when you know the melody of the song you are going to play, you can play it but if you dont and just play notes straight off, i dont hear the song well and it doesnt sound properly. Does that happen to you guys?

If you do not love playing people will know because they can hear the difference!

Please Please No applause just throw money!!!

If you rush that piece one more time I am going to toss a stand at you! (Sometimes it was a water balloon or her batton.)

Talent with out practice, drive and self disapline is worthless and will not do anything for you but set you up to fail! (That was one smart band teacher she could tell if you were lieing or not giveing all you had etc....)

"Ametuers practice until they get it right - Proffesionals practice until they CAN'T get it wrong."

    "Read everything on the page"

"There are four levels of musicianship:
    1. Beginner (I'm working out the notes)
    2. Novice (I'm working out playing the piece as a whole)
    3. Performer (I'm ready to perform)
    4. Artist (I'm ready to make this the best performance you've ever heard)

Every one of you must be an artist for this band to excel." (said in my first day sophmore year as a newb in the top ensemble of 6 in my high school)

Steve Orland, the best band director ever.

    Other quotes I like
    "Always perform, never practice"
"Always be heard, no matter the dynamic" Bud Herseth
"You can't practice improvisation, you can only improvise" Dizzy (i think)
"You use the Do (as in Do-Re-Mi) too much in your solos" Miles Davis said to Maynard Ferguson
