NOBODY understands the crazy CRAP the French came up with. Ever. Even the French.

getting back to the original point of the post,;-) i think its a whole combination of things that make a cornet different than a trumpet. i dont think its fair to say its just one or two key differences, but rather the whole instrument that comes together to make the sound. that being said, i think the wrap has little to do with it. a perfect example is the 80a. its loosely trumpet shaped, and yet depending on what mouthpiece you use it can be very mellow or fit right in with a trumpet section. it also depends on how you play it. if you play it like a trumpet, then it will sound more like a trumpet, and vise versa.

As you have said in a subsequent post, this scattering or smearing appears to explain the difference in timbre when more bends are added, and since higher notes require more precision, this dissipation restricts, if not eliminates the player's ability to use multiple valve combinations in the upper and extreme upper registers. I had envisioned sound waves conflicting with one another within bends due to the difference in distance between the inside and outside radii. Your study of pressure waves seems to confirm this.

    Which is more conical?
The only ddefinitive answer is my head.
My head is more conical than either a trumpet or cornet.
    It is, essentially, a cone.
