:dontknow:I don't really care. I'm not giving up the trumpet. I agree with the first reply. Just go to the doctor if something's wrong and take care of yourself!
P.S. I've heard enough of these things. If you really want to scare yourself, go to medscape.com and search for "maladies in musicians"

    Excellent post!!

Edit: For those who want a correct term for web searching, the term you used is not correct. It is spelled, Valsalva Maneuver.

    Thank you

I'm experiencing some of the same symptons like a fall in blood pressure, feeling light headed while playing, oh yah and last week i almost fainted in class in the middle of a song when playing the high A's. This has been happening for a couple months now when my band director gave us a new piece to play at contest which is now next saturday and i'm like so stressing out about it, and really I thought it might be that I need to practice more. I'm not sure. :dontknow:

How many trumpet players have died with their horn in their hands?
Doc, Bud, Maurice, Diz, Adolph Scherbaum, Manny Klein and many others have had long careers blowing into the dangerous instrument, the trumpet.

Hi. That's my British accent. 'Maneuver' is the American spelling so you're right that if you want US pages you should use that. Either is correct.

PS light-headness may be related simply to over-breathing (which drops your carbon dioxide levels). Especially if - like me - you tend to breathe too fast and shallow when nervous.

I recall a tabloid article about an Italian trumpet player named Ugo Solari whose head exploded during a trumpet solo, showering the front tables with brain matter. I think Terry Warburton claimed responsibility for that one.

Leon Merian was involved in a glaucoma study. He found that there was a significant increase in intraocular pressure when playing in the upper register. I believe that he published an article about it in the ITG Journal a few years ago. That didn't stop him from playing well past his 83rd birthday.

I suppose you'd have to conclude that professional trumpet playing is a high-pressure job...
