Yes, if you are sitting on a particularly hard chair. Try standing up some of the time when playing rather long notes. Ahhh... which cheeks are you talking about?

A small amount of burn is acceptable but don't over do it.
Rest as much as you play.

Why DO mariachi's play so long, anyways? The bands I've heard play in my neighborhood, play for an hour or two. I don't ever recall hearing them play for six hours, or whatever.

    Here is something from Wikipedia:
Although mariachis play at events such as weddings and formal occasions such as a quinceaƱeras (a girl's fifteenth birthday celebration), they are often used to serenade women because many of the songs have romantic lyrics.

I guess it sometimes takes a while for the ladies to make up their minds.

    The Wiki excerpt continues:
Prices vary immensely and are seldom cheap.
I would assume, if it is expensive, that means the musicians stay until they have success.

I remember subbing with a Mariachi band. I got hell for mispronouncing some words. The tune was Dos Besos (two kisses) and I said Dos Pesos (two cents)............ ;-(

The main question is: when your teeth make the impression on your upper lip does it hurt. Anything that hurts should be addressed right away. When you say it punctures your lip do you mean it cuts your lip. Anything that cuts your lip should be addressed right away.

The burn in your checks is a result of the work being done by the cheek muscles and this is a good thing. BUT when they start to burn that means the muscles have reach their limit and you need to stop playing and rest until the muscles have recovered.

The burn is the result of the isometric way the muscles are working.
