I was just sort of scrolling around some college websites, and ran across the University of the Arts website (www.uarts.edu) in Philly. The program certainly sounds interesting, but I've never heard any feedback on it. Anyone familiar with what is going on there? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have not heard of this school in particular. But there are some fine arts schools that are small but great. They don't have football teams. I took the time to download their catalog because after reading the website, I got interested.

The school is fully accredited and has over 100 year history. The majors, and many of the classes sounded like what I would want to see from an art school.

Of course schools like that are very competitive. That can bring out the best -- or crush your spirit.

Again, I just looked at the catalog. Hopefully someone else will know much more.

UA has a fine program in Philadelphia as does Temple U.
UA has a more central location while Temple is in north Philly.
UA is located above an old theater where they run many student shows.
it's also across the street from the old Gamble & Huff studios.
Curtis institute is up the street.
there's a lot of music and dance and theater in that area.
I'd go there, if i where young. 8)

    If i recall,

Mike Jarosz, the trumpet player who played the jazz chair in MF's band in 2003 went there.

I saw him with Maynard in 2003 on superbowl sunday.

I'll be attending the University of the Arts in the coming fall as a jazz trumpet major. I've already spent a considerable amount of time there, and I know most of the professors. They're great guys and damn good teachers from what I've experienced and heard.

Is that theater the Shubert? I think it is. It is right down the street from the Academy Of Music.
The faculty is first rate. I see listed some of the old crowd who did those midnite dates at Sigma Sound.
Evan Solot and Richie Genovese are high school friends of mine.
The staff is made up of winners.

it's a nice area to live in.
lots of art and lots of students.
a young player should have a ball there.

The Symphony Club was located on that corner when I lived in Philly.
They met twice a week to sight-read music from the Fleisher collection of the Free Library. It was a full sized symphony orchestra, a great place for a high school kid to hang. Lou Opalesky and I were part of the trumpet section.
There were lots of amateur groups to play in back in those days.
