As long as it plays well, I'm not that fussed how my trumpet looks... My current trumpet would look plain weird if I polished it well because there are patches where the lacquer is missing...

Ah! I'm not alone. I'm just too lazy to clean the horn. As a student, we clock in many hours in the practice room and with so many chamber music groups in school, one will just get too lazy to clean the horn up.

I still reel and retch from sitting beside a "trumpeter" who had to clean food from her mouthpiece with a knitting needle - during a performance. Letting your trumpet suffer because you are too lazy speaks absolute volumes to me. I am officially horrified.

yeah, that is not a very appetizing thing to do, clean your mouthpiece on stage with a knitting needle.

The best way is to have your breath support together so you blow the gunk through the horn onto the hair of the clarinet or viola player sitting in front of you!

Even though I do keep my horns 'reasonably clean', I tend to agree with Robin on his alternative method of trumpet cleaning.
