Started when I was 8. My dad bought an old Conn at a pawn shop to see if I was serious. 3 months later I got a new Collegiate. Got a Leblanc 700 for my 16th birthday, it was stolen in 1976 and I ordered a custom Leblanc 707A which is still my primary horn. I was playing in church at age 9. In the 5th grade I went to band tryouts and the numskull band director said I could never be a trumpet player due to my overbite and I should try clarinet. I didn't bother to tell him I already was a player. I played for church and weddings until 7th grade and joined the jazz band and never played in school after 7th grade. I'm now 60 and still play regularly and would love to have had a chance to play for the old 5th grade band director, Mr. Welch. Never tell a kid he can't play. If there's a will, there's a way.

While I played trumpet all through school, my original band director put me in a similar bucket. He flat out told me I would never be good enough to play anything but 3rd trumpet and not even that past high school. Due to his lack of encouragement and tact I forced my self to practice every day. At 64, I can say that not only did I play 1st trumpet in college, but also played semi-professionally for years. So yes Gabe2 you are correct, "If there's a will, there's a way."

I started at age 12 but consider my real starting point (READ: real practice) at age 17.

Yamaha cornet. 2330 or one of that models predecessors, or something like that.
    Bach 3 mouthpiece.

    Loved every second of it!

Started at the age of 9. My first trumpet was a Yamaha student model on loan to me from the local music service. Now been playing for 10 years - its amazing how time flies!
