    Hey folxs,

I thought this would be a great place to discuss what the trumpet is all about: MUSIC!! Not high notes or this or that. Just post some thoughts on what makes a well rounded trumpet player.

    PHIL SMITH'S Big 4
    Good sound and intonation
    Musical Imagination
    Rhymical understanding and integrity
Desire to technically controls one's instrument

William Strieders Rules for STP (Shaping The Phrase)
    Meter (emphasis strong beats)
Follow the Line (ascend - crescendo, descend - decrescendo)
Rhythmic (certain styles crunch 16th's etc.)
What's on the page (umm.. self explanatory)

    Lookin' forward to the discussion.

hmm, Id agree with all of the but the ascend-cresendo desend-decrecendo thing, some of the hardest phrases Ive ever had to master require the opposite.

I agree. I wrote a march for my symphonic band and asked the brass to play going up while playing a decrescendo. They grumbled at me for weeks. "That is SO hard to do" they kept saying, and it is.

In a like manner, keep up the tempo in a decrescendo, and keeping the tempo from rushing in a crescendo are difficult things. I know when I practice such phrases the metronome is off

True, both good points from both of you. I believe the up crescendo, down decrescendo was just a standard practice. There will always be an exception. Mastering those exceptions is what leads to a well-rounded trumpet player? Agree/disagree? Anyone else out there have some coments?

Id definatly agree with that, its the exceptions to the rules that seperate the men from the boys(or girls from the women).
