Is there any difference? Because the Bach catalog uses all three of these terms in the leadpipe section.

It's sort of meaningful and meaningless at the same time. The descriptions are meaningful in that they help sell trumpets and give geeks like me something to talk about.

They are meaningless also because the ideas they help form in the mind do not equate what it's like to play them with any exactitude. Also they don't precisely describe the all important sound you produce when you're tooting away.

A solution is to play lots of them and record facts in a notebook. Lots of fun when you get a buddy to get into it with you. Have your own little trumpet festival and testing session.

    Build your own Players Catalogue.

free means you get something for nothing, open means that the sound is big and easy to play, less resistance means that your air is gone faster.

Brochures and web sites are written by advertising/marketing people and not neutral minded trumpet players. Don't believe ANYTHING that you read and half of what you hear first hand and you will do OK.

If you are interested in a trumpet, you owe it to yourself to get informed. That means to play EVERYTHING that you can get your hands on. Take a year to pick an instrument out. Believe me, you will not be sorry!

Sorry, but when I hear the word "free" I think of Frank Zappa:

    I got to be free
    Free as the wind
    Free is the way
    I got to be

    Maybe i'm lost
    Maybe i sinned
    I got to be
    Totally free

    Our parents don't love us
    Our teachers they say
    Things that are boring
    So we're running away
    And we will be free
    And people will see
    That when we are free
That's the way we should be

    Our parents don't love us
    Our teachers they say
    Things that are boring
    So we're running away

    And we will be free
    And people will see
    That when we are free
That's the way we should be
    (we must be free!)
(we were free when we were born)
    IBut we wanna be free
    An' were gonna be free

Yes, we want to be free and we're gonna be free
    ... did you know that
Free is when you don't have to
    Pay for nothing
    Or do nothing
    We want to be free
    Free as the wind

Free is when you don't have to
    Pay for nothing
    Or do nothing
    We want to be free
    Free as the wind

Free is when you don't have to
    Pay for nothing
    Or do nothing
    We want to be free
    Free as the wind

Free is when you don't have to
    Pay for nothing
    Or do nothing
    We want to be free
    Free as the wind

    like I said, sorry.....

Actually, I was talking about free as in terms of when people say they want to "free up" the horn. or a horn that blows freer.
