What is this "lead" thing?

    Be happy Tom, back in my day, the jazz band director was a Maynard nut and purest, his only answer to anything was, "Take it down an octave.... IF you have to."

    I had one piece like that in HS—and only one. It was fairly technically intense. I still wish that our band director had spent more time on teaching improv techniques; it might have made it easier.

    I agree, the second part is the most fulfilling. I truly miss that part when the boss forced me to play lead. But I have the quintet now to keep my musical intelligence together. By the way, I have a unique method to teaching improv. I us Minimal Structure Theory. I use this same technique to also train my medical students and residents on how to improve on their patient-physician communication skills.
