A ride is an improvised solo.

As for my answer to the original question: Whatever part they hand me; it's all good.

I am glad to see my thread alive again!! My current jazz band doesn't have parts (we also only have 2 trumpets), as we are more of a "jam" group since no one seems to consistently show up other than myself and the rhythm section. We have a rotation of 7 real book charts (in concert c, so most of us have to transpose) and solo on all of them. I am NOT a natural soloist at alllll, but I think being forced to solo constantly is helping me as a player. At our largest we have a drummer, bassist, pianist (the director), 2 altos, 1 tenor, 2 trumpets and one "trombone."

This is my FAVORITE of bands to play in. Haven't played in this type of band since my NYC days (over 30 years ago), when I played in the 9-Lives Jazz Ensemble. Enjoy this experience. It offers much flexibility.

Don’t all trumpet players play the 1st book. All screaming away all day long? Then ‘ride’ to the next gig?

Only if they pass by my office first and pick up the prescription.
