Why that's easy... you just engage the whisper valve... Somebody here on TM what to show him that clip!

I can only think it is about playing them softly and with out over blowing, I've never come accross it myself

I'm with Andy (we're imbibing gin & tonics by the gallons)...yup, play Clarke's very softly, and don't forget to BANG those valves down HARD!!

As for the whisper key, disregard all of this shenanigans!! It's actually the step-down key...you can instantly play one step lower by actuating said key.

Btw: Gotta love the wall sign!!

I've HEARD that you play whisper tones with your teeth closed, but I can't get it to work. Whisper tones sound like a rush of air with just a little bit of pitch and tone in it. It's tough stuff to do, but if you could play Clarke 2 in whisper tones, hats off to you!

Playing in a whisper only when your ready. If you begin playing softly before your developed enough for this type of playing you'll pinch off the sound and strain ... progress is reversed.

First time thru "Tech Studies" at full volume with all articulations - several weeks on each - one repeat.

Second time slurred at medium volume with 2 - 4 repeats each.

Third - slurred as written at pp with many repeats.

David Hickman's book includes "Technical Studies" with the instructions written as Clarke wrote them.
