I've been "warming up" trying to get the chops in shape for a month or two (playing EVERY DAY) and this morning, after about 5-10 minutes of low playing, I found out I could play 2 octaves without too much effort....

It came as a real surprise, because I haven't had much luck hitting those higher notes before.

Is this the way it works for most? You wake up and find a higher range?

I think the range thing comes slowly. I'm guessing that you changed something else and don't realize it.

For me, permanent gains are more gradual. While you may wake up one day (or during practice on a random day) and be able to do something that you've never done before, it liukely won't last.

For me it's usually because I've done something different and accidentally discovered something. The trick is to repeat that accident over and over until it's no lobger an accident.

A stable daily routine is the single most important factor in getting better. You have your first step and a bit of proof. Instead of a 5-10 minute routine, move up to 20 minutes.

It isn't the warm up. It is the routine every day.
