I remember the first time that I heard An Outdoor Overture. I was subbing with the Mesa Symphony for the first time back in 1990 (I believe) on a 4th of July concert. My instructor (Jim Benitez) was also subbing on Principal, and another local player (Jeff Nevin) also a sub filled out the section (who knows where the regular group was).

Well, that solo goes up to a high C, and his sound was just so amazing. It was like he arrived at the high point to the phrase and delivered that note on a purple velvet pillow. I had never heard anything so amazing in my life (this was the first job that I had played with him).

Coincidentally, the Tempe Symphonic Wind Ensemble has An Outdoor Overture scheduled for our March concert, so I’ll get a run at the piece this season as well.

Ahh...4 Scottish Dances... Love that piece. We just performed that last spring. The trumpet 1 solos are quite challenging!
