![]() | Okay, when it rains it pours... I found out Tuesday morning that I need some more heart work. I go in on Monday for another angioplasty procedure to correct blockage in the circumflex. I have a great cardiologist, but I have bad CAD, so this is part of my life and I accept that fact. On Tuesday afternoon I established with a new internal specialist who I hope will get a better grasp on my health situation. In his initial exam he found an abdominal hernia, and yep, he said that the pains I'm having are all due to the hernia and how inflamed it is. I'm beginning to believe it is just time to hang up my horns. I love playing, but enough is enough. It seems that every time I really get to playing really well I need some surgical procedure that sets me backwards again. I can continue to teach my music, but I really fear that my days as a player have come to an end.

I pray that all will turn out very well for you. I also hope that you will be able to continue to play, but please do what will be the best for you and your family. You are a good man! -cw-

![]() | Well, Bandman, you were willing to keep up with the trumpet with a heart condition which was a courageous and noble effort, I must say. Not many trumpet players would be this courageous. Now that you find that you have a hernia, which BTW many trumpet players have had and who still continue playing the trumpet, and because of this you are thinking about giving up the trumpet. What I am saying is that it seems that this hernia is the straw that is breaking the camel's back. I know you are very upset with your health condition and being so, let this condition smooth itself over for awhile before you make long range plans about your love in playing the trumpet. Keep that joy and love burning and you will find that your health condition will improve better and faster. If you take the 'other road', give up and get depressed then one thing leads to another in complications and your health will go in the opposite direction. My teacher, Bernard Adelstein, had a hernia and continued playing. George Graham had bell palsy and continued playing. There are many health stories out there in the trumpet world but it all boils down to what that person really wants to do with himself. Don't hang it up yet. You've got to many years behind you on this and lot more things going for you with it in the future. I think that you will find that once you get healed, you will find that playing the trumpet will be a good exercise, one that you love, to get yourself back in shape. At that time, you will be better and more able to determine where/what/when and how/if to continue with the trumpet. Hang in there!! Liad Last edited by Liad Bar-EL; 10-15-2006 at 02:30 PM. |

![]() | I had hernia surgery [belly button] several years ago and it only put me out of commision for about 6 weeks. they put the mesh in and if I play too much it feels like a hundred needles down there. all it really did was to teach me to pace myself. do what you feel you must, you know your self better than anyone else knows you, just don't make any rash decisions just yet. I will pray for you and the doctors so for right now just take a step back and let yourself heal. your trumpet friend Dave
