I really can't tell how long it is but it is longer than my G-trumpet

There may be a few more turns, etc. I'm currently involved in an Alumni corps as well. The horns are lower in pitch, though may not be physically longer than a trumpet . . . (hence the comment about the turns in the tubing). G-sopranos have a bit of a darker sound as well, and when playing a high C on a soprano it's more like playing an Ab.

The big adjustment is hearing/playing the right pitch. I am constantly going after the wrong partial/aiming a bit too high. As I recall that goes away with familiarity. In the '70's when I marched with a corps and played trumpet in a band I could transition without much thought; I suppose that will come again.

Have fun.

Re: Bb vs G Soprano

Yo Philly!! Welcome to TM!

I grew up in Reading Buccaneer territory in the mid/late 60's - and the Bucs were our inspiration - what a great era - back then if our high school band won a marching competition - the band would march through town with a police and fire department escort!!

As alum corp go - saw the the Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni Corps about 3 years ago and they were very impressive - still do the old 60s/70s style show - everyone of them marching - including the flags - really took me back. What a great show and sound. Not many of the alum corp do "live action" show - Catch them if you get the chance.

Don't know which group you are with - but sounds like a good time and a good challenge. Best of luck.

Re: Bb vs G Soprano

it's identical to the horn on the gulf coast sounds page. after telling a friend of mine the difficulty i've had in finding info on it he told me to refer to it as a "soprano bugle". bingo, everything is now at my fingertips

after practicing it for a couple hours last night i know i'm gonna have trouble aiming for the wrong note when it's the right one that's coming out. but much like starting any new instrument it'll come with time, and eventually just become another notch in my belt. thanx!!

It is probably better without! Just imagine the stress of the lower instruments trying to keep up - and of the Sattva players trying to keep their arms up.

Bracken Cavaliers - that mean youse guys do the "Bristol Stomp".....? (I know - I know - weak attempt at humor....).

Sounds like fun with the corp - sure is a lot of work I'm sure.

Reading Bucs are still around and still going strong - large organization -which leads to a great full sound.

Your Cavs doing any performance for July 4th - maybe down at Penn's Landing?
