Re: Best Teacher.....better be Charlie Geyer

If anyone has aspirations of playing in an orchestra and wants to get an education to prepare him or herself to win a job it is very important to take a look at where former students are winding up.

However, at this point it is important to draw attention to another aspect of the Butler/Geyer studio success: the quality of the students as students. If you read up on Barbara's ITG master class (http://www.trumpetguild.org/2006conf...thur/303.html), you would note that she talks about the determination of her successful students and their willingness to teach themselves. I'll never try to diminish how instrumental Butler and Geyer have been very important in their success as I have the highest respect for both of them, but if the right techniques are applied, any student, regardless of quality of teacher (although this would make it harder/easier), could in fact be as successful.

Re: Best Teacher.....better be Charlie Geyer

When he was an active teacher, Mr. Vacchiano was THE teacher. He got the best students, and helped those students reach their potential. It seems like the same thing is now happening at Northwestern. I doubt that Mr. Vacchiano's success will ever be replicated, for many of the same reasons that the Canadians, Celtics, UCLA Bruins and (especially!) the Yankees will never dominate in the same way they once did.

The Influence of Mr. William Vacchiano
A fact sheet compiled by Brian A. Shook

Re: Best Teacher.....better be Charlie Geyer

Not to cause a stir, but,

In Philly, the Only student of theirs was Chris Martin. It sounds like you are doubling the success rate, as I am assuming you are including Chris in Chicago and Atlanta, as well as Philly. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Also, don't forget James Darling:
Students in:
Phoenix
Dallas
Detroit
Cincinnati
Cleveland
Philadelphia
Mexico
(I believe LA, but could be wrong)
And if you are counting players winning other jobs, you must count Montreal, San Francisco Opera, San Antonio)
These are by no means a complete list- just off the top of my head. Too bad he retired from teaching, as well as Cleveland-
Truly a remarkable teacher!
(almost all of these from Baldwin-Wallace, no less!!!-"WHERE"???)
Also, you can add me to the list of Ghitalla, and Vacchiano., two other greats who have saved my life more times than I can count, orchestrally!
