Spend your summer spare hours memorizing and playing ALL your scales, major as well as minor. It sure won't be a detriment to your future playing and just might help you when you walk into that audition and someone says "play me a concert A melodic minor...without the book".

I don't know that minor scales are all that important. They often make me sad, and my wife and daughter think I am playing wrong notes.

What about practicing for long periods of time before resting?
