It's also a good idea for those of us with horns that we don't play every day to remember that, somehow, horns get dirty just sitting there. I had an old student horn that I had professionally cleaned but when I picked it up after maybe 6 or 8 months, it was disguisting. I don't really understand that, but it woudn't be the first time...

cleaning

If you don't swab your leadpipe and tuning slide out every day, those of you that have a lot of acid in your saliva will have leadpipes( and tuning slides) that will rot out from the inside. Snake out your leadpìpe, and look down there. If you see craters on the sides, then you are seeing the pitting that has already occured. Gotta swab out those leadpipes with a clarinet swab cut down, so that they don't get stuck in the leadpipe. Some of you will have smooth leadpipes ( on the inside) even though you've never swabbed or cleaned your horn.(It's your body chemistry). You don't need to worry about this. But the rest of you HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Unless the leadpipe is made out of nickel silver, it will rot out even on the most expensive trumpet!

So you say to clean the horn....

But how do you suggest going about cleaning it? I have heared to let it sit in a bathtub of luke warm water and some dish soap. Do you suggest something else?

Thanks:)

brasssaver.com trumpet kit.
Since buying one I have used it almost every day on lead pipes and tuning slides, once a week on the other parts. The 5 horns I play most (Bb and C LT2000 ,Lechner C , P54 and Blachburn D) are almost like new when I pick them up to play.

I just got one of the trumpet set a couple weeks ago. I agree, these are the best brushes I have had. They have no metal, so there is no risk of scratching. Great tool!

When I attended the ITG Conference in 2004, I stopped by the Monette room to try the new Prana mouthpiece. When they looked at my horn they told me that my bell was bent. Sure enough, looking at it, I could see the subtle bend to the right. I’m using a Wolfpack bag that was designed for the horns, and I theorized at the time that I had made a hard stop in my car and heard my bag roll in the trunk. I was sure this was a bag issue.

A week before Christmas this year I played a Cantata at my Church. It had been quite a while since I cleaned my horn and this show had lots of mute changes. I end up pulling my slide out just a little for all of my mutes (intonation). Well on Saturday morning (the dress rehearsal) my slide was a little stiff and I had all of those mute changes. Saturday evening (the first service where we played the Cantata) I noticed that my bell was bent down (a good 5-7 degrees).

Aaagggghhh!

I couldn’t believe that my horn had been damaged, and for the life of me I couldn’t remember anything that had happened to my instrument between the morning rehearsal and the evening service. Then I started thinking about all those mute changes and the stiff slide. I had unknowingly bent my own bell! Thinking back, I remember having a stiff slide on several occasions prior to my ITG outing, so I’m sure that I had done the same thing several years earlier.

I guess the good news is that my case is doing its job properly. Now I just need to make sure that I wash my horn more regularly and keep that slide lubricated (I ended up being my own worst enemy with that soft bell and a dirty horn).

I’ll have to call the shop today and see if they can fit in a bell repair. I’ll have to borrow a horn from my instructor while I’m out of commission with my horn, but it if comes back playing better than ever, I’ll be in for a real treat in 2006 (almost like getting a new horn).

I will definitely follow this advice (my resolution for 2006 is to keep my horn clean and in good working order).
I just heard from Gretchen at Monette and my repair is complete and my horn is on it's way back to me, perfect in every way. Now I just have to make sure that I do my job and keep it clean and well lubricated on a much more frequent basis. I should get it back on Monday, just in time for my presentation in my kindergartener's classroom (a repeat performance from last year, this time with my middle son!).

Life is good!
