Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how do you determine the bore size in an LA-era Benge Bb trumpet? (Serial #27XXX)

Matt,

Look at the valve casing. Do you see an ML, MLP, or L, or CG there?

I've forgotten the bore sizes, and the specifics of the CG step bore.

I found that the valve casing reads "ML." This must mean that it is a medium-large bore, correct?

I still can't figure out what type of trumpet it is (2x, 3x, 4x, 5x).

I'm putting a wild guess that it's a 3x, haha.

I've flat out forgotten if the # 3, 4, 5, etc appears on the bell.

Someone in here will no for sure. Find some posts by topo3man, and pm him.

He's a fine gent and loves Benges. He'll know, as will others in here.

On the LA Benges, the number is probably stamped on the bell. All the ones I have owned have had that -- most 3, one 5. My Burbank Benge does not have the number on the bell, though the bell flare looks like a 5. The huge majority of Benges produced were the 3 bell.

The ML bore is .460.

The standard way to measure the bore is to measure the inside diameter at the 2nd valve slide with a pair of calipers.
