It increases the density of your upper lip, making it a better match for a "heavy" trumpet. Mendez kept his small because he wanted a brighter sound! If you play outdoors in the cold, it is a collection point for the frozen moisture coming out of your nose - thus keeping the top of the mouthpiece ice free!
