![]() | More abouot Jazz Player Radio... Well, folks, JazzPlayerRadio has just taken on a much bigger meaning to me. WBEZ, the august station in Chicago, Public Radio for Chicago, has had great jazz programming for many years. I sent their music director a copy of my new CD. I was trying to figure out why I was getting no response to some follow up email on the submission. I just found out why. WBEZ has let the music director go and will be phasing out ALL music (not just jazz, but blues, latin, everything) and going over to a complete talk format. Now, consider this. Chicago is approximately the third largest city in the nation (well over 10 million in the city and near 'burbs). They will be officially down to ONE station that plays real jazz (WNUA is a smooth jazz station, an oxymoron in my personal opinion - they don't count). That is another NPR affiliate, WDCB. I can now kiss goodbye any chance for airplay at BEZ! Jazz, as an art form is in BIG trouble in the Chicago market. It is very difficult for LOCALS to get any exposure. WDCB doesn't REALLY seriously support locals, though a few DJ's will ocassionally play someone they know. I have sent WDCB a promo package and even talked to the marketing director. I, as per his suggestion, followed up with an email, and have received no response (several weeks now). Maybe they just don't like my stuff. Fair enough, but NO response is pretty rough. I am a local, though. So, I am particularly grateful to the folks at JazzPlayerRadio.com for providing an oasis of hipness and eclecticism in what is becoming a cultural desert! These gentlemen have a much deeper sense of artistic vision than most. I've bookmared the site and play it in my classes all the time now. I love you guys! Peace! Nick

![]() | I think this is a sign of things to come or even things that have already come to pass the world over. A real jazz radio station started in the early 90s in UK broadcasting in london and manchester called "JazzFM". Granted the daylite stuff tended to be mostly "smooth" (jazz) but the evening and some of the weekend programming included some really good material spanning the entire genre from traditional to latin and beyond. The DJs were knowledgeble and committed. little by little they and their music disappeared until we were left with 24-7 "fusak". Eventually to their credit the station came clean and changed its name to "Smooth FM" - I don't even have it as one of the 24 presets on my car radio any more. Radio 3 in the UK, a long time broadcaster of classical music with NO commercial pressures, over the last few years has gradually begun to programme more jazz - in fact it is excellent but only amounts to a few hours per week. When i worked in france in the late 80s-early 90s you could always find good jazz and blues on the radio and some of what i heard then greatly influenced me. I have no idea what its like now except the french have always been much more adventurous with their music so maybe it continues ( I hope). I think the future will be the internet specialists for jazz - sit back and get used to it - but when you find these stations support them as much as possible. I now listen to JPR and several other jazz stations on the internet.

| Fortissimo User | http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/ Enter "JAZZ" in the search window. JPR is a fine station also. I think that these "webcasts" are the way of the future for anything not "currently commercial". |

![]() | 12 copies?????? Gee, Trent! I feel like a slacker! I only gave out three to WDCB - one to John Burnett, one to Bruce Oscar and one to Paull Abella (the music director). You must have sent to every DJ! OK, I'm on it! Nick
