Doc,

You are the reason I have played the trumpet for the past forty years. I heard you in Roanoke, Virginia in the early 70's and have been on fire for the trumpet ever since. Over the years I have been blessed to hear you play in concert seven times. My students ask me, "who is your favorite trumpet player" or "who is the most versatile trumpet player of all time"?

My Answer: THE DOCTOR

Thanks for all the wonderful trumpet music. God Bless You in your retirement Doc.

Best Regards,

Doc, Sir, Mr. Sevrinson,
Before I even knew what the trumpet was I remember staying up late (against my parents wishes) and listening to you on the TV. You are an amazing person and musician. I wish we could've met and maybe played together. I've learned a lot from you just by listening and watching. I love your playing man. You've also done a lot of wonderful things for communities and charities and stuff. Thank you.

Keep swingin'!

Doc,

When I was in high school I had two trumpet hero's. Raphael Mendez and you. You and the Tonight Show Band were fantastic every night. I loved how much fun you had with Johnny, but how serious you and the entire band were when playing.....and so rocking good........except for "stump the band".

I never got to meet Mendez but I did meet you at the Destino Days event in Indy. Of course you wouldn't remember me with all those great players there. I spent most of my time talking to Byron and you keep urging me to get up there and play. Of course I finally did. You were very gracious to me and I got to have my picture taken with you.

It is so cool to meet one of your hero's and have them turn out to be such a nice person. Thanks for all the inspiration and good luck in all your future endeavors.

Mr Severinsen,

I have probably listened to your version of "Georgia on My Mind" everyday for the past 2 and half years. I keep your sound, and your passion in mind every time I pick up my horn. I can still, after hearing you play that song day in and day out, get chill bumps down my body.

Recently I got the once in a lifetime chance to hear you play live, you came to my school, East Tennessee State University. I want you to know that I'll carry that concert, and everything that I've learned from you, even if I just listened to cd's with me the rest of my life. Just one of your cd's is the straight equivilant to thousands of dollars worth of lessons. I beg you to enjoy your retirement, and if you ever feel the need to once again perform, remember there is a whole world of fans that would drop everything in their lives to come see you.

God Bless,
Brandon Woods

Hello Doc

Doc,

While I've admired many fine trumpet players over the years, you are one of two who have been my biggest inspirations. You and Maynard.

Maynard recals fondly the times you and he had on Charley Barnetts band. We talk about it often. As a matter of fact he has a large blow up of that trumpet section on his studio wall in his house. From left to right Rolf Ericson, Doc Severinsen, Ray Wetzel, Maynard Ferguson, Johnny Howell.

I could write pages, but I'll make this short. Thank you for your inspiration and what your contibutions to the music busines have done for trumpet playing. You're one of the greatest ever!

All the best!

Doc,

I have a couple of pictures of me trying out your Destinos in Indianapolis. You were setting there with someone talking into your ear. I hope, not talking about how bad I may have sounded. I'll charish those pictures and the memories of that day forever.

I remember back in 1969 or 1970, our Sinfonia Chapter president who knew you and Johnny well enough to know your phone numbers. That evening, he called Johnny to see if you could come a be part of our Mid South Jazz Festival at Austin Peay State Universiy in Clarksville, TN. Johnny called us back the next day. He said he could not let you come down because you all were heading to California, but he said he would send us Clark Terry. We said OK! It was one of the best Festivals ever.

You have been and continue to be a fine example being a great trumpet player and a fine gentleman.

From me in the 1960's and those just coming along, a sincere heart felt thank you.

Doc,

You were what inspired me to pick up a horn in the first place. My life hasn't been the same since and I have you to thank for that. Your music is inspiring and always will be. Best of luck with your future work. You will always hold a place close to all of our hearts.

Hi Doc,

I just wanted to say thank you for the way you treated me when we met in the 'green room' over 15 years ago when you were in Cincinnati playing with the Pops. You didn't know me from Adam, but you were so kind, and spent a long time speaking with me & my date until they came to rush you off to an after-concert party. What a great memory I have of that evening - truly a 'brush with greatness'!

What an inspiration you are to so many of us. Thanks, Doc!

Best regards,
Blaine
